ExperiMending Workshop with Amy Walker
Saturday December 4, 2021 | 1 – 3:30 pm
Join expert maker Amy Walker for a hands-on mending workshop at MOA, and delight in the possibilities of sustainable habits like upcycling and visible mending.
In this hands-on workshop we’ll look at examples from the MOA Collection, discuss the historical role of mending, and reflect on how the relationships humans have with our clothing and other personal belongings often show cultural values and priorities. We’ll look at innovative examples of contemporary mending practice across the spectrum of arts and crafts.
This will be followed by a lively discussion circle with show and tell, and hands-on mending session. We invite you to bring items of clothing to mend (small items requiring hand-stitching are recommended). Amy will share instructions and resources for a variety of mending techniques and focus on your specific questions.
Suitable for ages 10 and up. Children under the age of 10 should be accompanied by an adult. All skill levels are welcome; no experience required.
Tip: We’ll supply tools and materials including a variety of fabric and thread, but feel free to bring your own fabric pieces for inspiration and experimentation.
Tip: If you have previously mended pieces, feel free to bring them along for show-and-tell, and share your knowledge with the group.
