Opening Celebrations of Shake Up: Preserving What We Value

Join us for the opening celebrations of Shake Up: Preserving What We Value, MOA’s new exhibition that explores the convergence of earthquake science and technology with the rich traditional knowledge and oral history of the living cultures represented in MOA’s collections.

Join us for a full day of museum fun for the whole family to open Shake Up: Preserving What We Value. Choose your own adventure from a range of earthquake-inspired activities—from 360 virtual reality tour, lectures and hands-on workshops, to performances of song, dance and storytelling. This day-long celebration, taking place throughout the Museum, draws from the cultures of earthquake-prone regions, as well as the knowledge of scientists and cultural experts.
Enjoy an experimental dance performance by Mascall Dance, interactive play with Gamelan Bike Bike, a workshop on Balinese Kecak percussion and dance, and a performance by Canada’s first children’s taiko group, Chibi Taiko.
The Shake Up: Preserving What We Value exhibition puts into the foreground both scientific understandings and traditional knowledge of earthquakes. Through art and culture, the exhibition highlights how knowledge of natural disasters that has been passed down through generations throughout many cultures. Shake Up is presented in conjunction with the seismic upgrades of MOA’s Great Hall to help preserve the building, the collections and cultural heritage.
Admission to the museum and Shake Up opening celebrations on this day is by donation. Proceeds will be donated to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières, in support of their work providing emergency humanitarian medical attention around the world.
