Sound House: Awoken Word
Thursday November 7, 2019 | 7 pm
Sound House this month offers a night of poetry, music and truth in the intimate setting of MOA’s Haida House.
The night features the voices and talents of spoken word poet Angelica Poversky; hip hop artist Keliya; award-winning poet Ifrah Hussein; poet and emcee Dana; African-Jamaican-Canadian musician Ital Blue; and the UBC Slam Poets.
Sound House is MOA’s new music series, now in its second season, featuring a fantastic and eclectic lineup of Vancouver bands and musicians—from folk to funk, hip hop to jazz. Sound House is a celebration of culture and music, set in MOA’s Haida House, against a stunning backdrop of Northwest Coast art and architecture. Gather around the toasty bonfire outside with friends, and let the picturesque views and scent of cedar inhabit your senses. Sound House delivers surprises and delights on the first Thursday of each month.
Bios
Angelica “Angeliquoi?” Poversky is a spoken word poet, an interdisciplinary artist, active organizer and a general loudmouth clown. Her work frequently is situated between art, activism and delight.
Keliya is an artist, hip hop persona, activist and filmmaker; her current solo work speaks to Indigenous worldview, rise, voice and passion for unity and change. Through her music, she invites everyone to feel what hip hop and spoken word has to offer, in a new way.
Ifrah Hussein is a Somali-Canadian award-winning poet and author of An Anthology of Grief or the ways a Somali Woman Loves. Ifrah was recently named Artist of the Year at the Somali Excellence Awards and is the 2017 Canadian Individual Poetry Slam Champion—the first woman to have won the national title.
Dana is a Haitian-born poet and emcee. His diverse lyricism springs from his unique life history, experiences and extensive spoken word background. Dana has made a multitude of internationally collaborative music; notably, several hip-hop mixtapes and a self-published poetry chapbook, Just Another Day’s Work.
Ital Blue‘s music is a blend of hip hop, jazz and R&B, steeped in roots values. Through spoken word, rhythms and melodies, Ital brings their listeners into an open and meditative state of mind. Ital’s original visionary, Dae AKA Ebonempress, shares her lived experience as a woman of African Descent and expresses her African-Jamaican-Canadian culture.
