Learn MoreWhere the Musqueam and Maya Meet: Indigenous Knowledge of Land and Sea — SOLD OUT
Sunday August 12, 2018 | 10 am – 3 pm
Join MOA for a unique full-day experience to celebrate Indigenous knowledge of the land and sea, co-hosted by Terry Point from the Musqueam First Nation and representatives from the Maya in Exile Garden at UBC Farm.
Bringing Musqueam and Maya cultures and traditions together into this one special day, this event includes an in-depth tour of the Maya Garden at UBC Farm, a delicious catered luncheon of Maya and Musqueam foods in MOA’s Haida House, presentations from knowledge holders of both cultures, and curator-led tours of MOA’s current exhibitions, Culture at the Centre and Arts of Resistance: Politics and the Past in Latin America.
Participants will begin the day at UBC Farm with a tour, led by Lix Lopez and the Maya in Exile Garden team, to gain insights about Indigenous Maya agriculture and traditions. Following the tour, participants will meet at MOA’s Haida House to share a meal that mixes the culinary traditions of the Musqueam and Maya peoples. Lunch features dishes with corn, beans and squash, grown in the Maya Garden and prepared by their team, and Musqueam cuisine of salmon, bannock and berries prepared by Salishan Catering.
