Peter will share his research on traditional mineral paints and historic commercial products used as paint by his ancestors, such as Reckitt’s laundry bluing. Join in conversation with this Nuxalk carver as he researches the past to create for the present and future. This event is presented in conjunction with MOA’s new feature exhibition, Nuxalk Strong: Dancing Down the Eyelashes of the Sun.

Alklasis–Peter Snow is a MOA artist-residence from April 5 – 13. This event and residency is funded by the Levi Strauss Foundation.

Bio

Alklasis–Peter Snow is a Nuxalk carver, knowledge holder and initiated kusyut (winter ceremonial) dancer from the lineage of Snuxyaltwa of Talyu, in South Bentinck. Peter is inspired by the carvings of his ancestors: great-great grandfather Snuxyaltwa (Louie Snow), and great uncle Suuncwmay (Dick Snow), who have treasures on display in the Nuxalk Strong exhibition. It is clear that Peter is connected both spiritually through Syut (supernatural energy) and through blood lines to the ceremonial treasures he carves.

Slow Fashion Season 2025 is a set of public and student-oriented activities based at UBC aimed at changing behaviours around textile waste and fashion consumption, by mounting inspiring events that showcase sustainable and regenerative fashion and textile initiatives.

This first edition of Slow Fashion Season includes a student Slow Fashion design challenge, workshops on campus, a knowledge exchange on sustainable clothing, an exhibition of winning clothing designs by professional designers and artists, selections from the student sustainable fashion design challenge, and a poster exhibition about sustainable fashion and textile research initiatives. The event culminates with a Slow Fashion Show in MOA’s Great Hall.

Join the exhibition co-curators and First Nations community members for an in-depth dialogue, responding to the powerful archival photos featured in MOA’s current feature exhibition, To Be Seen, To Be Heard: First Nations in Public Spaces, 1900–1965. The contributors challenge and re-shape our collective understanding of the public, yet little-known, history of Indigenous people in this period. The roundtable conversation will be followed by an opportunity to see the exhibition with the co-curators and speakers, before it closes on March 30, 2025.

To Be Seen, To Be Heard explores how, during the potlatch prohibition and other forms of erasure, First Nations people represented themselves as Indigenous in urban public spaces. Rich archival material reveals the diverse ways that they worked to have their rights to their lands, their laws, their future recognized.

Ko Te Ākau, by New Zealand-based dance artist Charles Koroneho, explores the formation of new spaces, the performance of Indigenous languages, poetry and ancestral bodies. The hope of a poetic land, water and sky is the horizon carried by the project, where optimism and guidance of a human being in ceremonial performance places our imagination amongst the cosmos. A vehicle for past, present and future presences, Ko Te Ākau transports us through remembrance, acknowledgement and aspiration.

MOA artist-in-residence Charles Koroneho is an independent artist working in the fields of performance and culture. He is the lead creative, collaborative director and researcher of Te Toki Haruru, a conceptual platform created to explore Indigenous creativity, cultural collaboration and the intersection between dance, theatre, visual arts and design.

The Dancers of Damelahamid, in partnership with MOA and the Anvil Centre, present the 18^th annual Coastal Dance Festival. The Festival is a celebration of the stories, songs and dances of the Indigenous peoples of the Northwest Coast with guest national and international artists. The Festival brings Indigenous artists together to share and support one another in a celebration of lived artistic practices. Guest national and international artists have connected the festival with a global community of Indigenous dance.

The Artist Sharing Series: Radical Re-shifting of Imbalances is a four-part series where artists featured in the Coastal Dance Festival will share their processes and practices by way of discourse, movement, song, story and multimedia. The discourse will address Indigenizing spaces by asserting ways of knowing that are embedded in Indigenous song and dance, as well as, preparing oneself for active witnessing to reshape the lens through which Indigenous arts are acknowledged.

This series is an opportunity to actively learn about Indigenous dance through the vast histories and stories of the Indigenous artists and communities represented at the festival.

On the opening weekend of MOA’s latest feature exhibition, co-curators Snxakila–Clyde Tallio and Jennifer Kramer will lead visitors on a guided tour of this groundbreaking exhibition dedicated to the Nuxalk Nation.

Nuxalk Strong: Dancing Down the Eyelashes of the Sun is a powerful display of healing and sovereignty. Through this exhibition the Nuxalk Nation demonstrates their resurgence and return to Stl’mstaliwa—the full human experience. Nuxalk Strong illustrates how the Nation is bringing back ancestral governance, laws and protocols; revitalizing language; stewarding lands and waters; and awakening spirituality and ceremony by re-opening Nuslhiixwta, family treasure boxes that contain names, crests, songs, dances and regalia.
